Mobile access control
Badge into the office using only your phone, using Calven's access control and Apple Wallet integrations
If access control is configured for your organization, you can use Calven to unlock doors at your office with your mobile phone by simply tapping your phone to the badge reader.
When you've been provisioned an access control pass, it should automatically show up in the Calven app on your device:
If your access control provider supports Apple Wallet, you'll even be prompted to add your pass to your devices wallet for faster access:
Tip: take advantage of Express Pass in Apple Wallet to make office access even easier!
If you miss the prompt, you can also view your access pass details and Apple Wallet status by tapping on it from your office pass:
If you think you should see an access control pass but don't, reach out to your office administrator for help troubleshooting.
FAQ & Troubleshooting
The wallet option is not shown in my app
The wallet can be enabled for all users in your tenant or only for users who belong to specific locations. Users with a primary location where the wallet is not enabled will not have the “add to wallet” option shown.
Add to wallet fails
Check that user is logged in to iCloud on their device and has multi-factor authentication set up for their Apple Id.
Does the user have an invalid pass in their wallet? If a previously issued pass has been revoked by an admin or by activating a pass on another device, the deactivated pass remains in the wallet but is flagged as being “unavailable”. This pass needs to be removed using the Wallet App (or the Wallet section of the Watch app for watch passes) before a new pass can be issued.
Why can’t I add my pass to Apple Wallet?
Confirm that you have turned on two-factor authentication for your Apple ID. Verify that you are signed in to your iCloud account on your devices where you are adding your pass (i.e. iPhone and Apple Watch). If you are having issues logging in to your iCloud account, reset your Apple ID password. Confirm that your phone has Apple Pay enabled. Confirm in the Settings app that Terms and conditions with Apple have been accepted. Learn more about Apple Wallet.
What happens if I lose my phone or watch?
If a device is lost you should mark it as “lost” in the Find My app or in iCloud as soon as possible. Marking a device as lost will suspend the passes on that device. It will not suspend passes on any other devices (e.g. marking your iPhone as lost will not suspend any passes on your Apple Watch)
What happens if I get a new device?
Simply sign in to Calven on your new device and repeat the “Add to Wallet” process. You can find the “Add to Apple Wallet” button in Calven by tapping on your avatar, going to Settings and then “HID Mobile Access”.
What happens if my device runs out of battery? Can I still use the card?
Cards with Express Mode activated can take advantage of power reserve on supported iPhones to allow access even when the phone has shut down due to low battery. Tap the side button on your phone to show the low battery icon. If the text “Express Cards and Keys Available” is shown you can present your phone to a reader.
Do I need a network connection to use my pass?
An active network connection is not required to use passes from your Apple Wallet. However a network connection is required to download the pass initially.
Is there a device limit ?
Your organisation may limit the number of devices on which you can have access passes:
Most organizations will have a policy where issuing a pass to a new device will remove any existing pass on the same type of device (so if you sign into Calven on a new phone and get a wallet pass, any passes on another iPhone will be removed, but Apple Watch passes will not be affected).
If your organization allows passes on multiple devices of the same type, they may still have a limit on the total number of devices and/or the number of devices of each type.
What is the minimum device version and iOS version required for Apple Wallet with Calven?
-
iPhone with iOS 15 or later
-
Apple Watch Series 3 or later
How do I remove a pass from my wallet?
Open the Wallet app open your iPhone, or the wallet settings in the Watch app on your iPhone, and find the Calven access pass. Tap the to access the pass details and then tap “Remove Badge”.
Access is not granted at the door when I scan my phone / watch
Discuss this with your internal Calven Administrator or Facilities/IT/Security. They will investigate to see why your Apple Wallet isn’t working.
What is Express Mode?
Express mode allows you to use your Apple Wallet pass without authenticating to your device with FaceId/TouchId or your passcode. You can disable Express Mode by viewing your pass in the Wallet app and tapping the to open the pass details.
Note that if Express Mode is disabled you cannot use the pass with power reserve.
Your organization can also disable Express Mode for specific readers. You will need to authenticate to your device to interact with these readers.
