Connect your access control platform
Connect Calven to your access control provider and provision mobile access badges to Apple Wallet
All about Calven Access Control & Apple Wallet
Calven intelligently links your employee directory to access control, allowing you to manage access and even distribute badges via the Calven app and Apple Wallet. This is a guide for admins, explaining how to connect Calven to HID and how to provision access for your employees.
Prerequisites
Background needs:
-
Office badge readers that support Apple Wallet (NFC) via HID
-
An access control system that is connected to Calven
-
We support Integriti today and can work to support other systems (contact support@calven.com)
-
Process to enable:
-
Enable the Calven add-on for access control as part of your Calven plan (contact support@calven.com to learn more)
-
Send an email to support@calven.com with the subject line “CompanyName - Apple Wallet Artwork” containing the hex code for your brand color and a copy of your logo in white/black depending on the brand color. This will be used to create the Apple Wallet “card artwork” that users will see.
-
Ideal logo format is SVG, but a hi-res PNG with a min. height of 248px is also acceptable
-
-
Go to backoffice.calven.com and go through the HID integration process to connect to your HID portal:
Connect via Calven’s HID Origo integration
-
In your HID Origo management portal, create or choose an org which you’ll connect to Calven.
-
In Calven Backoffice, navigate to integrations > HID Origo > add configuration and download the certificate file from Calven.
-
In the HID Origo management portal, add a new system account upload the certificate.
-
In Calven, enter the UID and token URL from your HID Origo org
-
Click ‘Connect to HID Origo’
-
Thats it! Once you’ve connected HID, Calven will match your user directory with the directory coming from HID in order to distribute passes through the Calven app.
See and manage access for employees
The Calven team will work with you to assign a default set of credentials for each Calven office you’d like to provision access for. Each Calven user will have access to the set of credentials, or “pass” for their default office.
Once you’ve configured the integration, Calven will match your employee directory up with the users in your access control system (via email address), and show a view-only list of access passes and the users to whom they’ve been provisioned, as well as the status (active/archived) and the type of pass (Apple Wallet / Physical Card / Calven app).
As an admin, you can use the ‘actions’ button to suspend or archive a pass. Provisioning of specific credentials is managed via the HID Origo portal or third party building access system.
Additional access (for example, to a specific card reader) can still be provisioned to individual users in your original access control system. The Calven team will also work with you to assign specific credentials to members of specific Calven groups (for example, Gym Members). When a user is offboarded from Calven, removed from a group, or assigned to a different office, their access will be updated or revoked automatically.
Using your access pass
As a user, once you’ve been provisioned an access pass and the Calven HID integration is configured, you’ll see ‘mobile access’ within your booking pass when your working location is set to office. This should happen automatically. To use the access pass, just tap your device to the card reader.
If your access control system uses bluetooth, make sure Calven has access to your device's bluetooth feature. It’s also important to enable location access, as some readers can be configured with a “geo fence” to ensure you are physically near the office.
FAQ - Admins
What happens if I run out of HID licenses and new users try to onboard?
HID will allow passes to be issued to users even when your licensed quantity has been exceeded, but you will receive emails and warnings in the HID portal and you should purchase additional licenses as soon as possible to ensure continued service.
Will HID licenses be returned from users that are deprovisioned?
Licenses are only consumed by users with active passes or credentials. Only a single license is consumed per user, even if they have multiple passes (e.g. iPhone and Apple Watch). Once a user is deleted or all of their passes/credentials revoked then their license is made available for use by others.
You can check the number of licenses your organisation has available in the HID Origo Portal.
What versions of HID readers are supported with Apple Wallet?
Apple Wallet works with HID R series readers fitted with the HID Mobile Credential option and HID Signo readers. Apple Wallet is also supported by the HID OmniKey 5427 family of USB connected readers typically used in printers and other embedded applications.
What versions of Integriti software are supported by Calven?
Calven works with Integriti Release 22 and later for access control. Integration with Calven presence requires Integriti Release 23 or later.
Why won't the door unlock when I scan my badge?
Ask the user if the pass animation is appearing on their device when they present it to the reader (there will also be sound/haptic feedback).
If yes, then the Integriti admin needs to check the Integriti logs to see why access was not granted. If the pass is newly issued then it may not yet have been added to Integriti or the update may have failed - We can check the Integriti Agent log in GCP logging
If the pass is not activating then it may be disabled - this will be shown both in back office Access Passes and in the user’s wallet app.
A pass can be disabled as a result of admin action or by the user reporting their device as “lost” in iCloud/Find My.
How do I disable Express Mode for a reader?
The HID reader manager app is used to disable express mode for a specific reader. This app connects to the reader via Bluetooth. Your security installer can assist with this.
